How does it work?
Briefly, shareAcar matches your journeys with other users of shareAcar who are travelling similar routes. By then contacting each other through shareAcar’s safe messaging system you can arrange to give each other lifts. As most cars travelling to and from work only carry the driver, for each passenger you carry a car is effectively being removed from the traffic queue on your journey. Can I list or browse other peoples journeys?
No. For security reasons, you can only list your own journeys. When a journey you have entered matches another user, you will be able to see their user name as long as the gender matching criteria of both you and them is compatible.

How secure are my details?
Your details are held in a secure database by shareAcar, they cannot be accessed by other users without access to both your username and password. Even if you leave your computer logged in, you still need to re-enter your password to call up your personal details. Additionally your password is held in a highly encrypted form by the system to prevent unauthorised access. You should of course keep your password safe and private at all times and not reveal it to anyone. Once you are logged in you can change your password as often as required.

Who can see my journeys?
No one can see your journeys except yourself. Please note that for convenience you are not asked for you password each time you view your journeys so ensure if you leave you computer unattended in an office, you either log out or close your browser. When your journeys match those of another user, you have an option of sending them a message. In this message the details of the journey are disclosed, but only down to the level of village or region that your journey starts and finishes in. shareAcar will never reveal your address to another user.

How can I put in my journey and keep by address private?
Journeys are entered from a start to an end location, for convenience these locations are entered using the first part of a post code. For example entering WC1 as the primary postcode then gives a more local option of Bloomsbury, High Holborn, Holborn, King’s Cross, Russell Square or St Pancras. This is as fine as the detail of journeys ever gets. There is no streetname or house number held on a journey so your address can be kept private to other potential matches until you are ready to provide such details.

How can I arrange a journey if the other person does not have my address?
Through the messaging system you can add comments which can include details of specific pick up points or alternative contact details (mobile phone number, e-mail address etc.) as required. The important thing is that you are in control of this, shareAcar will not reveal these details for you.

What if no one matches my journey?
As a member there is a link titled My Journeys, this lists each of your journeys in a table with a select box on each journey showing other users who travel on similar routes. There is a search criteria which enables users to search for near locations or times of travel to find potential matches. In the event that there is not a user registered with your journey when you put it in, shareAcar will send you an e-mail should a matching journey ever be entered by another user.

What if I move home or office and my journeys change?
Your personal details can be changed at any time within the site once you have logged in. For security you will need to re-enter your password to view your details on screen and also again to change any details. Whilst this may appear a little cumbersome, it does offer significant protection to your details where the system is accessed in a public or office environment.

How do people contact me?
Initially all contact has to be made through the shareAcar messaging system. This allows users to send messages to other users which are delivered by e-mail. You are not able to reply to the e-mail to return a message as shareAcar does not reveal anyone’s e-mail address. Instead you must access the shareAcar site and send a message back to their username. This in turn will be delivered by shareAcar to the other user by e-mail. You can at anytime include alternative contact details in your message, but you are in total control of when and how you do this.

Will my e-mail address ever be revealed?
No. shareAcar’s safe messaging system has been designed such that revealing e-mail addresses is not necessary.

Will my personal details ever be revealed?
No. shareAcar operates a strict privacy policy and will not reveal your personal details to any other user. More details of this are available here.

I have changed my e-mail address, how can I update shareAcar?
You have full control over your personal details and can change them at any time by selecting the CHANGE DETAILS link on the user menu. You must have previously logged in to see this menu. The only items you are unable to change are your username and gender, these can only be changed by shareAcar for security reasons.

Why do I need a username?
For your own security it is best not to advertise the fact that you are away from home, whilst shareAcar will not allow anyone to browse journeys in the database, it is better that you should remain anonymous until you are ready to reveal who you are. Therefore it is suggested that your username is not chosen in such a way that it clearly reveals who you are.

What should I choose as a username?
You need to chose something that you are going to be able to remember. A username can have up to 20 character which can be any alpha numeric characters. You cannot use punctuation or spaces, these will be removed. It is probably best that your username does not easily identify you, so a Christian name and initial or Christian name and a number are best.

Can I change my password?
Yes. A password is generated by the system and e-mailed to you when you complete your registration process and have paid for your account. This is sent immediately which should enable you to log in within seconds of completing the application process. Once you have used this password to log in, you are free to change it as often as you wish.

I have forgotten my password, how can I log in?
Click on the FORGET PASSWORD link. This will e-mail you a new password (shareAcar does not keep records of unencrypted passwords so a new password must be generated if you forget your old one) as soon as you have verified who you are. Your password will be e-mailed to the address held on the system. If you have changed your e-mail address from the one held by shareAcar and need a new password, you will have to contact us with a request for new log in details.

Can I only match with people of the same gender?
Yes. Part of the inbuilt safety policy shareAcar has adopted is to allow you to specify who you would be willing to share a car with. So for example a female can specify only matching with another female. The system works two ways on this so that not only will you never be matched with a male doing a similar journey, no male will ever see your name appear as a possible match of their journeys. By default the gender matching criteria is set to matching both male and female. You can change this when you register and at any time by changing your details.

Can I ensure people of the opposite gender do not match with me?
Yes, if you have excluded matching with other users by means of gender, they will not be offered matches with you.

Can I match only with smokers / non smokers?
Yes. You specify as part of your user details what your preference is with respect to smoking or not. You should however be aware that whilst shareAcar will exclude matches based on non qualifying gender, the same is not true of smoking. When you respond to another user your smoking preference is stated in the message, it is then up to them whether they accept or decline on this basis. shareAcar includes smoking preference and reveals this to avoid embarrassment rather than using this as a basis to reject matches.

Why do I have to pay £5 to become a member?
The £5 annual membership fee helps to cover some of the costs of running the service, but more importantly goes some way to ensuring that people who register are genuine. You cannot register unless you have a credit card / debit card.

Is my payment secure?
Yes. shareAcar use a payment service provider who has been approved for internet security purposes by Lloyds Cardnet. This service provider is Protx who were selected because of the additional security and encryption methods they offer in comparison to some other service providers.

Will by credit card details be safe?
Your credit card details are never held on the shareAcar site. The payment process takes you to the secure Protx site where you card details are entered and verified. The shareAcar system is kept completely isolated from this to ensure that your card details are always safe and secure.

Can I cancel my membership?
If for some reason you want to cancel your membership, you can do so at anytime, there is a link on the members menu called MY ACCOUNT from this you are able to cancel your membership. All we ask is that you give us two weeks notice to cancel if you are close to your renewal date.

If someone sends me a message I think is abusive, what can I do?
shareAcar takes any form of abuse very seriously, our service is reliant on the reputation we create and the genuine intent of our users to use the service in a professional and courteous manner. Any activity which you find in any way contrary to this should be reported to shareAcar for us to investigate. A form is provided on the members menu, or the standard contact us page can be used. In the event that shareAcar finds the reported incident to be abusive, we have the option of immediately cancelling that users membership.

How can I list a park and ride scheme which is not on the list?
The park and ride directory is provided as a useful reference to anyone accessing the site, whether as a registered user or not. We welcome being informed of new park and ride schemes which are not listed or additional or updated details of schemes already in the directory. There is a link to a form on the park and ride directory to advise us of updates. We list these as quickly as possible once we have verified the data supplied.

I have a suggestion I think could improve the site/service, how do I suggest it?
shareAcar is always willing to consider any improvements which can be made to the site. Development is continuing on new areas which are planned to add value to the site in the future. Any ideas or suggestions can be submitted through the contact us form.

What are the benefits to me of sharing a car?
Different people will have different reasons for wanting to share a car. Some of these reasons include:
Saving money from reduced fuel, parking, wear and tear on your vehicle (assuming you accept a lift as well as offering one).
Wanting to help reduce the number of vehicles on the road and thereby reducing traffic.
Wanting to remove the stress of having to drive each day in heavy traffic and enjoy being a passenger for a change.
There are many more reasons, but whatever they are, the effect on yourself, the environment and other road users is always positive.

What are the benefits to the environment of sharing a car?
Reducing the number of cars on the road reduces emission levels and is kinder to the atmosphere. Less cars also means less traffic and less wear and tear on the road surfaces. Ultimately to the point where road repairs are required less frequently which cause further congestion which in itself has a costly impact on the environment.

Will it really reduce traffic?
The success of any traffic scheme and in particularly one like this relies on as many people as possible taking part. The “I will leave it to others” attitude is not helpful here. That is why we encourage potential users to think of what they will gain, this may be in terms of cost, it may be in reducing the stress of driving by being a passenger occasionally. Whatever the reason for taking part, each car that does not make a journey is a reduction in traffic. The best example is during the school summer break when for approximately six weeks traffic does move more freely, yet studies have shown the volumes of traffic during this period are only slightly reduced from other times. It therefore follows that take up of the shareAcar scheme could have a significant effect on local traffic.
