| BACKGROUND INFORMATION |
shareAcar.com is part of part of Officepark Ltd, a web design and hosting company which was founded in 1997. The concept of shareAcar originated in 2000 when preliminary development work started on the infrastructure to support it. It was however with the increasing volume of traffic and the proposed commencement of congestion charging in major cities which prompted the completion and launch of the site in 2002.
Hardly a day goes past without some form of major traffic event or incident hitting the news. Be it fuel stoppages, increased taxes, strikes or a large accident, the motorist is always the suffering party. From surveys conducted over the last two years as part of Officepark’s market testing for shareAcar, a significant majority of car commuters indicated they would be pleased to try any alternative. For many, it was just a break from being behind the wheel each day, whereas others welcomed the savings in fuel they would achieve. A common thread though, was making more efficient use of vehicles by having more than just a driver in each car.
Many respondents had actively looked for car sharing prospects, but their search was limited to work colleagues and close neighbours, all recognised that potential partners could live or work very close but not be known to them. shareAcar has been designed to bridge that gap, utilising a state of the art database design coupled with national promotion and advertising, it is anticipated that shareAcar will become the dominant force in matching drivers and passengers.
Officepark Ltd was founded by John Clark and Hugh Douglas-Smith, both veterans of the IT industry. From initially developing sites to promote small and medium sized companies, services grew and product offerings expanded. From the outset, Officepark has always endeavoured to provide some form of business benefit through their web sites as opposed to being pure “brochure ware”. Applications have included online package tracking for freight handlers, customer service management systems, vendor sites and aircraft booking systems. Today, Officepark still provides dedicated design and management of customer sites, but is also focused on providing community sites bringing benefits to a wider audience. shareAcar.com is the first of these communities.
